The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) is a world-class research organisation focusing on land and freshwater ecosystems and their interaction with the atmosphere.

Hydro-JULES is a NERC-funded research programme which contributes to hydrological research in the United Kingdom. The programme is delivered by UKCEH in partnership with the British Geological Society (BGS) the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) and the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO).

Hydro-JULES Education is delighted to offer an online course entitled Modelling Hydrology and Global Change (previously called the Hydro-JULES Summer and Winter Schools).

Course Description

Applications to the summer 2024 course is now closed.

  • Course dates: Wednesday 3rd of July (10:00 – 12:00 BST) and Monday 8th to Thursday 11th July 2024 (9:00 to 16:00 BST)
  • Course level: Beginner (no prior experience with Hydro-JULES required)
  • Location: Online event

Our  students will participate in practical workshops, attend virtual fieldtrips, hear keynote talks from our Hydro-JULES scientists and take part in our expert panel discussions. The objective is to train undergraduate, post-graduate and other international early career researchers (ECRs) from the fields of water and the environment, land surface science, water resources, freshwater ecology, hydrometeorology, biogeochemistry, and other related research areas concerned with the delivery of next-generation land-surface and hydrological predictions.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the underpinning principles in modelling hydrological systems at large catchment, continental, and global scales.
  • Demonstrate the technical ability to run JULES and standalone Hydro-JULES tools to investigate hydrological processes under current and future scenarios.
  • Use Hydro-JULES tools to enhance collaboration in scientific projects.

Public Outreach

As part of our ongoing public outreach, we are pleased to announce that our keynote talks will be accessible to the wider community.

  • Live Streaming and Recording: Our keynote talks will be streamed live on Zoom.
  • Subtitles: To make our talks accessible, we will provide subtitles in English.
  • Interactive Engagement: Audience members can participate in live Q&A sessions and engage with speakers in real-time.

"Online meetings provide many opportunities for the students, especially those who can't afford to pay the living cost and travel fee to UK when attending the course physically. I did enjoy this training very much, it provides helps me in academic networking with many experienced researchers from UK. The training sessions are also very useful for young researchers to develop new skills and knowledge. Hoping there will be more opportunity for the students to join variety of workshop conducted by the team. Thank you!

“A brilliant experience last week on the virtual Hydro-JULES summer school, lots of valuable insight shared and great to see so many students connecting. Looking forward to the Winter School January 2022 ".
Environmental Science Undergraduate,  June 2021

"I am sending this email to you to say thanks for successfully arranging the Hydro-JULES School. I really learned a lot from the keynote talks. All the topics which are discussed in schools are very informative. As you also provide an opportunity to talk with the experts was a wonderful experience. I am also thankful to all experts who gave the lectures. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a place in the winter school but thanks to the given opportunity to listen to the talks. I also got access to some of the virtual workshop's videos which are also informative".
