08:59:03 From Marcia Spencer - UKCEH to Everyone: Good morning all & welcome to day 2. 09:14:00 From Alberto Martínez to Marcia Spencer - UKCEH(Direct Message): Hi, I am around but I cannot really talk, I have to be looking at other things here and talking on the phone all morning. I will use the chat if necessary. Alberto 09:15:10 From Marcia Spencer - UKCEH to Alberto Martínez(Direct Message): Morning. Does that mean you'll be only able to participate on the Q&A by using the chat box? 09:15:53 From Alberto Martínez to Marcia Spencer - UKCEH(Direct Message): Replying to "Morning. Does tha..." Yes, I am sorry 09:16:40 From Marcia Spencer - UKCEH to Alberto Martínez(Direct Message): Replying to "Morning. Does that ..." OK. I'll let Toby know. 09:16:54 From Alberto Martínez to Marcia Spencer - UKCEH(Direct Message): Replying to "Morning. Does tha..." yes, I told him too 09:17:10 From Alberto Martínez to Marcia Spencer - UKCEH(Direct Message): Replying to "Morning. Does tha..." you got my video ok? 09:17:17 From Marcia Spencer - UKCEH to Toby Marthews - UKCEH(Direct Message): Alberto can only participate in the Q&A by the chat box. 09:22:56 From Toby Marthews - UKCEH to Marcia Spencer - UKCEH(Direct Message): I see the note about the chatbox for Alberto. OK - no worries! 09:23:30 From Marcia Spencer - UKCEH to Toby Marthews - UKCEH(Direct Message): OK. Maybe Andrew can pick up some of the answers. 10:12:34 From Usman Munir to Everyone: Andrew :Have you considered the surface water and groundwater interaction? if yes, How does surface water affect the sub-surface water/Aquifer? Is groundwater table increasing or decreasing? (General Trend in UK) 10:13:49 From Marcia Spencer - UKCEH to Everyone: Please raise you hand or type your question in the chat box. 10:14:52 From Jose Cuadros to Everyone: Can you clarify which subsurface modules are already available in JULES? We have worked in some JULES runs but are currently looking on how to route subsurface flow. 10:17:03 From Alberto Martínez to Everyone: Jules "out of the box" does the free-drain approach, water flows to runoff once it passes the resolved soil layers (typically down to 3m) 10:17:52 From Alberto Martínez to Everyone: Also you can use the TOPMODEL approach that uses topography characteristics to calculate baseflow 10:18:50 From Alberto Martínez to Everyone: and finally the approach I presented, wich is DGW and resolves explicitly the water table depth and gw-river flow 10:19:07 From Alberto Martínez to Everyone: "DGW still not in the trunk" 10:19:44 From Alberto Martínez to Everyone: but my 5.2 brunch is working fine and available 10:20:00 From Alberto Martínez to Everyone: branch! (not brunch) 10:20:30 From Jose Cuadros to Everyone: Thank you very much 10:22:37 From Clara Gimeno Jésus to Everyone: Has the subsurface routing been implemented in the main trunk of JULES, and there is a switch needed to be turned on, or is there a separate code branch? If it is the latter, who holds that branch, the MetOffice or CEH? 10:28:27 From Toby Marthews - UKCEH to Everyone: In answer to Clara: subsurface routing is already implemented in the sense that subsurface runoff is added to the surface runoff (=total runoff) and that is given to the river routing algorithm if the switch l_rivers is turned on. Inside the river network, JULES does also allow a minimal exchange of water between the river surface flow and the river subsurface flow, but conceptually this is an exchange between the upper bit of the channel and the lower bit of the channel, not an exchange with the soil underneath the river channel. All-in-all, as has already been mentioned, the dynamics of water movement below 3-4 m depth is not very well represented (whether in the soil or in river channels), which is why we need Alberto's work on DGW. 10:29:42 From Clara Gimeno Jésus to Everyone: OK, thanks a lot! 10:32:40 From Clara Gimeno Jésus to Everyone: Thank you for a great session! 10:32:58 From Marcia Spencer - UKCEH to Andrew Hughes - BGS(Direct Message): I'll leave the session open for 10 mins so you can add stuff to the chat. 10:33:04 From Yuchen Gu to Everyone: Thanks for the presentations 10:33:09 From Alberto Martínez to Everyone: Thanks and sorry about being mute 10:33:19 From Szczykulska, Magda, UKCEH to Everyone: Thank you 10:33:44 From Usman Munir to Everyone: Thank You 10:34:17 From Andrew Hughes - BGS to Everyone: Reports on Jon Lee's quaternary approach: https://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/532926/ and https://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/532925/ 10:36:06 From Andrew Hughes - BGS to Everyone: Papers on hydrographs in the Eden Valley, Cumbria and examining inter-annual variation: https://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/531865/ and https://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/530582/ and https://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/512086/ 10:37:12 From Andrew Hughes - BGS to Everyone: Paper on "spin up" and initialising groundwater flow models - old but still useful: https://ngwa.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1745-6584.1973.tb02956.x
